Recent Storm Activity
The recent storm activity and the close proximity of tornadoes, has many of us, as owners at Carefree Resort, very concerned.
Understandably so, since most official publications advise that trailers provide little if any shelter from the destructive force of a tornado.
In fact, we do not have a structure on site which would be considered sufficient shelter in an event such as a tornado. Most official publications say to avoid structures with large span roofs, such as malls, auditoriums and our own clubhouse. The lower level of the clubhouse may provide better shelter than upstairs or our own trailers, but there has been no study done to indicate this and there is certainly not adequate space to shelter every possible individual that may be at the resort during an emergency.
The communities we live in do not provide storm shelters either. And, as we have all seen from the news reports on the devastation of communities in the southern U.S. this spring, tornadoes can be incredible destructive to virtually all forms of man made structures.
We each choose of our own free will to enjoy the many benefits a mobile home resort has to offer. None of us were promised emergency shelter when we purchased our properties.
No one at Carefree Resort, including staff or members of the board of directors, has special privileges regarding access to shelter in an emergency.
So that is the reality. Safety is ultimately our own responsibility.
The board of directors has received numerous emails and communications expressing concern and we have had frequent discussions amongst the board members on an appropriate course of action.
First and foremost, we suggest that everyone take it upon themselves to research this important issue on their own. You can learn about your safest options, what emergency supplies to stock, etc.
A committee has been formed to explore the various possibilities of achieving safer options for us all, should we be faced with a natural threat such as a tornado.
We will gather available information provided by the government of Alberta and publish it in our newsletter. It will also be available at the office and downloadable from our website.
There is a course on first aid being offered this weekend and we urge you to attend it.
We encourage everyone to offer any suggestions you may have.
"Be safe” is not just a wish. It is a reminder that it is up to all of us to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Update of the Water & Sewer
Good day!
Our water treatment plant is fully operational (in fact the pool is being filled); however the challenge is with the sewer lines (still frozen) due to spring coming late this year. The water line to units cannot be turned on until the sewer lines are clear. Rest assured, our "C" Team is doing all possible to clear them, and restore full services before this weekend, however at this time it is not looking favorable.
This problem has been made worse by Owners flushing fluids down the sewer lines over the winter. There have been questions as to why we don't run high pressure steam through the lines to speed up the process. This was debated at the last Board meeting, and it was decided that the risk of damage to our aging sewer pipes was too great.
In anticipation of the likely possibility of not having functional water/sewer service this weekend, we have taken the initiative to bring in several porta-potties, which will be distributed around the Resort. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the line-ups for Clubhouse facilities. We are doing our very best to have the water and sewer operational by the weekend, but in the meantime strive to make the Owners' weekend as "Carefree” as possible.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

Subject: Road Bans atCarefree Resortin effect as of April 1, 2011
Written by: Don Shewchuk, General Manager
Fellow Owners,
Please be advised that Road Bans will be in effect as of Friday, April 1, 2011 and will remain in place until further notice.
Road Bans are put in place each year in the spring to protect the integrity of the roads within Carefree Resort. We are anticipating some very mild weather in the near future and the Resort has seen an abundance of snow this season.
Themild weather, snow loads and the fact that we have little frost left in the ground, results in a lot of moisture and soft areas throughout the Resort.
As of Friday, April 1, 2011. Owners, guests, contractors or anyone wishing to enter Carefree Resort with heavy trucks, trailers or heavy equipment must first be approved by the Carefree office before entry will be permitted. You are advised to contact the office in advance of making plans to go to the Resort so as to ensure you will not be refused entry at the front gate due to Road Bans.
***Please note that Road Bans do not apply to passenger vehicles***
To obtain approval you must contact the General Manager - Don Shewchuk at the Resort office by phone at 403-227-2100 or e-mail don@carefreeresort.com. Please visit http://www.carefreeresort.com/ for further information and updates.
We thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Subject: Motorcycle Pilot Program
Written by: Dennis Herr, President
Dear Owners:
The Board of Directors recently received a request to consider a pilot program that would allow Carefree lot owners to drive their motorcycles to their lots. After serious consideration and discussion, a pilot program was approved for the 2010 season. At the 2011 Annual General Meeting, all Carefree lot owners will have the opportunity to vote on and determine if the program will continue.
